Merit’s start-up in 1974 brought together two names well-known in the Iowa construction industry—Voightman and Rinderknecht. By joining the Rinderknecht family, Merit shares in the company’s legacy of building Eastern Iowa communities for more than 130 years.
A group of stockholders from Rinderknecht Associates, Inc., in Cedar Rapids bought the Voightman Construction Company of Marengo. By 1976 the new business had reorganized as Merit Construction Company, an employee-owned commercial general contractor based in Cedar Rapids and operating throughout Iowa and the Midwest.
Merit has been growing steadily ever since, building a broad range of facilities in Oskaloosa, Burlington, Iowa City, Muscatine, Pella and other cities across the state. We are proud of the buildings that stand as testaments of our contribution to Iowa history.
In addition to building enduring structures that become memorable parts of the Iowa landscape, we also take pride in living here and raising our families here. We care deeply about our communities and this caring guides our craftsmanship and our values. We volunteer our time, money and energy to causes and charities that make the towns and cities of Southeastern Iowa great places to live.
Yes, Merit builds buildings. Just as importantly, we help build communities.
Merit provides complete management and construction services for projects of all sizes and degrees of complexity. With a solid record of growth and achievement, we look forward to a successful future. We’re dedicated to providing complete construction management services, seasoned experience and strong leadership for every project we undertake.
